During the African slave trade, the religious gods of the Yoruba religion of southwestern Nigeria were brought to Cuba, but practice of this religion was forbidden by their Spanish masters. The basis of Santeria came about by disguising the Yoruba gods with some of the Catholic saints which were worshiped by the Spaniards. In Haiti, Yoruba is closely aligned with Vodun, and in Brazil with Macumba.
